Where In The World? No. 9

mrs mac

Can you work out the location from where I took this photo? Look closely for some landmark buildings and their position to help you.

Can you give the exact address or longitude and latitude? Let us know which words you used in a Google search, any other search apps you may have used, and which details in the photo helped you.

EXTRA: Dig deep into the history of the location from where the photo was taken. Who was it named after and why would this mean anything to us?

    Hello
I believe this a photo from Mrs Macquarie’s chair
    The coordinates are 33.8594° S, 151.2222° E
I immediately guessed the photo was from somewhere near Farm Cove. So I searched google maps. I also got the coordinates that way.
Wikipedia states she was the wife of Governor Macquaire. (Governor of NSW from 1810-1821.) She used to sit on a limestone rock and watch the harbour traffic.

I have figured out that the place you have taken this photo from is Mrs Maquarie’s Chair.

    It’s exact coordinates are: (-33.936066, 151.011833)

This photo was named after Mrs Maquarie, who was the second wife of Lachlan Maquarie. She played a significant role in establishing New South Wales.

I figured all this out by first searching in google maps for the Sydney Opera House. I saw from your picture that the spikes/fins were facing the right, with the bridge behind it, so, using street view, I managed to find the perfect spot where your photo was taken at. The perfect spot was Mrs Maquarie’s Chair. To conclude I searched on lots of websites to find who Mrs Maquarie really was.

    Bye! 🙂

I used google earth and searched up the harbor bridge and found this area called Mrs. Macquarie’s chair and it looked like the place where you were because the opera house was on the left and the bridge was straight ahead from you.

This picture was taken at the Botanical Gardens in Sydney with the bridge on the right and the Sydney Opera House on the left. The calculations for Longitude and Latitude is 33.8642 degrees South and 151.2166 degrees East. We found this by using past knowledge and searching on Google Earth for “The Royal Botanical Gardens, Sydney”. Once we found it we looked from the street view and found a match between photos.

The chair is close to Mrs Macquarie’s road and it is on a path near. The field of grass it is near is called Mrs Macquarie’s Point.
Elizabeth Henrietta Macquarie was a Scottish woman with a father named John Campbell. In 1807 November 3rd Elizabeth Macquarie got married to Lachlan Macquarie (her distant cousin) a governor in New South Wales from 1810 to 1821.
She went to lots of places including Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) , the Hunter River and one December 31 1809 she landed in Sydney and the country was torn by fractions. Elizabeth supported him throughout. She took a great interest in the Aboriginals and also the women conflicts. She designed a road which was named after her and she took a great interest in the gardening and agriculture. She has said to have introduced hay making in the colony and she brought books on architect from England which was used by her husband the architect.
I found this information on google maps by looking up Sydney Opera House and found a view point that looked and the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Then I found the site: http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/macquarie-Elizabeth-Henrietta-2418 and it explained her life.

This is the Sydney harbour bridge that she was looking over to will she was really at Milson point New South Wales.
This is the Sydney Bridge. This building is in fact used for walking on and looking over out to the view. The photo is taken from a public beach area where it is very likely that it was a park and people might have benign eating lunch. She was at Milson point New South Wales.
I Straight away through that she is some where you can get a clear photo and a places where it’s named after someone. She is at Milson point. Milsons Point is a suburb on the lower North Shore of Sydney, Which meant it would most likely be Milson point which it named after James Mison.
Milson point is a bay spot and a railway station. This is what it is used for now.
    • Milson’s Point 1930-1983
