DIGITECH DAY 2017

We are learning to solve problems that involve digital systems.

This is known as computational thinking. We will be using strategies such as organising data logically, breaking down problems into parts, and using algorithms and patterns.

TASK 1: BITSBOX

Create a simple app which combines at least two of the Bitsbox exercises. Share the app with a friend and get them to give you feedback on your app.

Go to the Bitsbox page here.

You can create a free kid’s account to save your apps. Look for the ‘Save Your Work’ menu item on the Bitsbox home page. Remember your sign-in details. Don’t forget to save all the apps you create. This will make sharing with a friend much easier. The online tutorials are very useful. Don’t forget to check out my Bitsbox books and trading cards – some good mindstretchers here.

Here’s an example of my YoYo app. It’s still a work-in-progress!

TASK 2: MAKEYMAKEY

Work in groups of 3. Connect the MakeyMakey to your computer.

Check out how to set up the Makey Makey here.

Quick project:Use the Makey Makey to do a High-Five with this Scratch project.

Level up! Try this game with your MakeyMakey. Create an interesting console for your game.

TASK 3: SPHERO ROBOT

Starting tips: match the Sphero number and iPad number. Use the SpheroEDU app.

Find the Programs menu. + for new program. Program type: BLOCKS.

Work through these tasks. Program your Sphero to:

  1. go away and come back to you. TIP: start slow and short, then repeat and make it more challenging.
  2. spin on the spot.
  3. go through a maze
  4. do a 5-step zigzag, changing colours at each step.
  5. play skittles.

EXTRA: SCRATCH CHECK-UP

MAZE TASK

Spend some time playing the Scratch game: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/98868880/

Now try a remix. Are you able to save your game? YES – if you have joined up Scratch.

ELROY’S PIRATE GAME

I designed this game for my 4 year-old grandson Elroy, who loves pirates. Play the game, and leave a blog comment to give me specific feedback how I can change the programming to improve the game.

    Hi Miss Lockyer,
I think you should add more enemies as the game is too easy and make the treasure chest smaller and harder to touch
